Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has warned that the Balkans is in danger of slipping under Russian influence if the Trump administration ignores the region.

In an interview published Thursday at “The Telegraph” Rama raised question also whether the European Union is doing enough to ensure stability and block Moscow’s alleged plots.

According to Rama, without the US support “the Balkans would not be a place where there is peace and cooperation”.

“For the US this area is very important strategically and the US is very important for us,” he added.

“Russia has been interested in spreading its influence and there’s a lot of it in this region,” Mr Rama said.

Russia has been accused for a role in Montenegrin Prime Minister’s assassination plot last year, while Kosovo President has accused Russia for helping Serbia in its attempts to deescalate the situation in Kosovo’s northern regions.

There has been a growing concern for Russia’s growing influence also in Macedonia, a country that has passed through a severe crisis during last year and has failed to from a new government after December’s snap elections./tvklan.al
