The head of Albania’s top election body said on Sunday they country has no time to implement the electronic voting and counting system.

The chairman of the Central Election Commission Denar Biba told reporters that it requires about two-year time to fully implement the technology in the election process.

Biba was speaking Sunday in capital Tirana after signing a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Association of World Election Bodies, which will help with the feasibility study for the implementation of the electronic voting and counting technology.

Electronic voting and counting is one of the key requests of the opposition parties in Albania as the country heads the general elections to be held on June 18.

The Democratic Party has even made it clear they are ready to postpone elections just and only to have the system that would guarantee free and fair elections in the country.

But, the Albanian top election body thinks that the system can’t be implemented within months but it requires about two years.

Biba also said that a considerable budget must be allocated for the electronic voting and counting system, something that was not foreseen in the 2017 state budget./tvklan.al
