As Albania is awaiting a positive recommendation from the European Commission for opening membership negotiations, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ditmir Bushati urges the Union to balance the rule of law and the economic development. Bushati attended the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Sofia, where he also talked about the importance of a reduction of the economic development relationship between EU countries and the Balkan region, which can be through financial instruments enlargement process.

In an interview for Bulgarian media, Bushati welcomes the EC’s enlargement strategy, but says it should have specified the steps that should be taken by aspiring countries to be part of the union.

“We would like the strategy to be more detailed on the steps that must be taken by the candidate countries, the measures and financial and political instruments that can be provided by the EU. However, this is a huge step in the right direction. We want to work with the Commission and the member countries in the realization of six major initiatives that could potentially bring us closer to the EU. I think we better focus on what awaits us on the horizon rather than the date, as well as the quality of the reform process”.

According to the minister, aspirant countries should focus on the quality of the reform process rather than dates or deadlines./tvklan.al
