The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has dismissed Tuesday the appeal filed by the Football Association of Serbia against Kosovo’s UEFA member.

Football Federation of Kosovo (FFK) was admitted as the 55th member association of UEFA in May last year, a move that Serbia says is illegal and sought to annul.

Serbia argued that UEFA breached its own rules in admitting Kosovo as a member association because it is not a U.N. member.

But the court said the admission was legal as Kosovo was “recognized by the majority of the UN member states as an “independent state”.”

“As a consequence, the resolution remains in force and FFK’s admission as a member association of UEFA is confirmed,” the court said.

One week after being admitted in UEFA, Kosovo joined FIFA and is playing now in 2018 world Cup qualifying matches.

Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia back in 2008 and is recognized by over 110 countries, including The U.S., Britain, Germany, France and Italy.
