Former Chief Prosecutor Adriatik Llalla has made strong accusations against the US Ambassador in Tirana, Donald Lu, in a letter to the American Congress in May 2017.

In addition to accusing him for having links with the Soros Foundation in Albania and intervening in Justice Reform formation, Llalla says that in May 2015, during a meeting they had had, Lu asked Ilir Meta’s arrest, which at that time had the function of the Parliament Speaker.

“Through a non-diplomatic manner and against any norm provided by the Vienna Convention, Ambassador Lu suggested to the Attorney General the arrest of Parliament Speaker and at the same time SMI leader, Ilir Meta. According to Mr. Lu, Parliament Speaker Meta was corrupt and hindering Justice Reform. His potential arrest would help Albania integrate sooner into the European Union. Such a completely inaccurate request forced the Attorney General to stop the meeting, explaining that the arrest of any person, including officials, is made only on the basis of evidence”.

Immediately after the publication of this letter, US Ambassador to Tirana, Donald Lu, has reacted, saying that this is an absurd lie and the former Chief Prosecutor Llalla is a corrupt puclic official who risks getting jailed.

“Former Chief Prosecutor Llalla is a corrupt and discredited public official who is under active scrutiny of money laundering and unexplained mass wealth. It is not surprising that he continues to speak against Reform in Justice, because he is now threatened to go to jail for his corruption. He claimed that within four months of my arrival in Tirana, I told him to arrest former Speaker of the Parliament, Ilir Meta. This is an absurd lie by Mr. Llalla, without any basis in fact. His offensive lie is an insult to President Meta and the Albanian people”./
