The U.S. Embassy in Tirana welcomed Armando Prenga’s resignation from the Parliament, saying those with criminal records has no place in the parliament.

“The U.S. Embassy welcomes former parliamentarian Armando Prenga’s departure from the parliament. Those with criminal records have no place in the parliament, courts, government, or municipalities of a NATO member country that aspires to join the EU,” the Embassy said Tuesday.

“We encourage the Albanian people and Albanian institutions to be vigilant in preventing criminals from becoming candidates in the June 18 elections,” it said.

The Embassy said Albanians deserve to have a clean political and judicial system, free from the influence of organized crime and corruption.

Prenga resigned from the post on Monday, an hour before the Central Election Commission was scheduled to meet and decide his fate.

In the letter for the Parliament Speaker Ilir Meta, Prenga said he had decided to resign to ensure his personal and family’s peace, despite the decriminalization law foresees a fine not his mandate’s interruption./tvklan.al
