The discussions continue among 28 permanent European ambassadors on the accession negotiations between Albania and Macedonia in the European Union.

The three countries that have been skeptical last week. During the discussions, the French ambassador reiterated that France is currently against the enlargement, but remains committed to helping aspiring countries in various forms to advance with key European integration reforms.

The Dutch ambassador has voiced that the Netherlands is against the opening membership negotiations if there are no further concrete results in the Justice Reform and the fight against organized crime and corruption.

The German ambassador has not expressed a clear stance whether Germany is in favor of opening Albania’s membership negotiations with the EU or not.

15 member states are unwilling to support them for opening negotiations and have insisted on reaching agreement on the wording of the text. There has been some kind of tension regarding this, as there is no time to discuss again, as the decision for Albania and Macedonia is taken on Tuesday.

Today’s meeting of permanent ambassadors is crucial to reaching a text upon which member states can make their own decision.
