Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama accused the Democratic Party led opposition of abandonin the judicial reform after their decision to boycott the parliament until Rama resigns to pave the way for a caretaker government.

Opposition supporters have occupied the square in front of Government headquarters in capital since Saturday and are stayin 24 hours in tents. Democratic Party Leader Lulzim Basha vowed to not step back until Rama resigns and a caretaker government comes in zharge to guarantee free and fair elections.

But, Rama says that everything is an alibi to abandon the judicial reform the country is trying to implement.

“We need the vetting law,” Rama said, speaking abort the way how the country can get rid of corrupt judges and prosecutors.

“Vetting is the only way to liberate our people and police from the clutches of these killers, which today are being protected by the boycott of the Parliament,” Rama said.

The vetting law is the key component of the judicial reform in the country, one of the most important requests of the European Commission before opening accession negotiations with Albania, a country aspiring to join the European Union.

The EURALIUS, an EU technical assistance project to assist in the consolidation of the justice system in Albania says that the Vetting law will initiate an evaluation process for the judges and prosecutors, members of the Constitutional Court and the High Court, legal advisers in the Constitutional and High Court, legal assistants in the administrative courts and legal assistants in the General Prosecution Office.

“The evaluation process will be based on the assets check, background check (connections with the crime and criminals) and professionalism of the judges and prosecutors,” EURALIUS says in its website./tvklan.al
