Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos threatens the discussion on the Cham issue in negotiations with Greece could endanger Albania’s EU membership. For the Greek president, the Cham issue does not exist, and the position of the Albanian government on this issue is unacceptable.

“It is unacceptable that the leaders of the Albanian state raise in this moment on the Cham issue. Apart from the fact that it does not exist, it is good for Albania not to recall the significance of the history of so-called “Cham” during the Nazi atrocities in Greece if it wants to have a European perspective”.

The head of the Greek state made these comments during a meeting he held at the Larissa military base. Coming from New Democracy conservatives, Pavlopoulos has been critical in the past to Albania when he has accused of violating the rights of the Greek minority.

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kocias during a televised debate on Greek public television ERT two weeks ago denied having spoken so far about the Cham issue in the ongoing negotiations with Albania to resolve the problems of the past./tvklan.al
